Hi all!

As you know, we’ve always made sure our websites work on all the major browsers on the different platforms: Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Opera, Chrome - on Mac and Windows.

But we’ve now decided to drop support for Internet Explorer 6!

Internet Explorer 6 was released in August 2001. It came out a few weeks before the Twin Towers fell. It came out before the first xbox and iPod, before Facebook, Twitter, YouTube. It wasn’t made for today’s state of the web, not to mention all the security leaks it has.

It wasn’t an easy decision, but Internet Explorer 6 adds a lot of time on each job to make sure everything works. We think that putting so much effort into an outdated browser is not worth it for most of our clients. The time needed to eradicate all “errors” to show the website correctly in IE6 increases its price as a lot of additional work is required.

On the upside, there’s a lot less swearing in the office, it’s a lot more relaxed; we can now dedicate more time to important things!

Don’t worry, support for Internet Explorer 6 will still be available as an option!

If you’re still using Internet Explorer 6 or 7, download Internet Explorer 8, or checkout the other really good browsers out there like Firefox, Safari, Opera and Chrome and enjoy the web again!

——– 31st August UPDATE ——–

A lot of people asked about support, so I have some more details:
We will still check the sites in Internet Explorer 6, we will still make sure the websites are usable, it just might not look as good as on better browsers…

Looks like it’s quite this month, maybe because of the summer holidays in the northern hemisphere…

I really like the different designs in this article, big, bold, doesn’t look at all like the websites we continually see on the web.
Even though the final design is pretty different from the rest, it is maybe more accessible and easier to read, very clean…
By the way, Elliot Jay Stocks is going to be at the Web Directions conference in Sydney in october.
http://carsonified.com/blog/design/web-design-is-a-journey/

Font’s used by popular logos:

Augmented reality is really here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cH6r2tIaRXU&eurl=http%3A%2F%2Fblog.cubancouncil.com%2Fpure-unfiltered-awesomeness&feature=player_embedded
Here’s another app, but now with the messages from twittrer, what about wikipedia and all?
http://i.document.m05.de/?p=685

Design History in just a few pages:
http://www.designhistory.org/
Maybe this is something for pman: It’s short, and it’s not printed on paper…

Wow, full hardware support in Safari, fast, smooth, amazing
http://www.satine.org/archives/2009/07/11/snow-stack-is-here/
Firefox is already quite behind, now even more. It looks like no budget community development can’t keep up with Apple’s dedication… No comment on Internet Explorer 8, it’s already a dinosaur.

Brush Pilot, manage/install/view all your brushes easily
http://www.brushpilotapp.com/

Swatchbook of old swatches, you can even sort by year. Made by the Power House Museum (Sydney).
http://www.powerhousemuseum.com/electronicswatchbook/
They often do nice stuff, they published photos and scans of all their art work last year on flickr, all have a creative commons licence, geo tagged (http://www.powerhousemuseum.com/flickr/sv-index.php).
It’s hosting the 13th International Design Festival this year as well, starting next week.

What? According to a poll, people don’t want any fast internet? BS…
http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/07/20/2630917.htm
What about 200 free HD channels? on demand HD video? unlimited voip calls? Pages and files loading instantly? Online gaming without lag nor latency? High def video chatting? etc… etc…
People really don’t want this?

Facebook again. Make sure you change this, or you might end up in the ‘Are you single?’ ads. Or maybe the guy’s wife was using one of the meeting services

Google Wave 2 weeks ago, and now Opera Unite. My prediction: Wave will work. Unite will Fail
http://wave.google.com/ - http://unite.opera.com/

Convert *.pub (M$ Publisher) documents to PDFs on Mac:
http://www.pdfonline.com/
I had to do it this weekend, and it works perfectly.

Firefox is overtaking IE in Germany. Firefox 40% and IE 38%
http://www.earthtimes.org/articles/show/273248,firefox-nearly-overtakes-internet-explorer-in-germany.html

Yeahhhh
http://www.flickr.com/photos/robotjohnny/3629069606/sizes/o/

Better QuickLook plugins (eg look into archives):
http://theappleblog.com/2009/05/06/four-useful-quicklook-plugins/

The Quality of Open Video compared to H264:
http://hacks.mozilla.org/2009/06/update-on-open-video-quality/

Everybody is talking about Open Video; but Audio is now native too, no plugins needed… Anyway here’s a simplistic example made in javascript and html:
http://evilbrainjono.net/piano.html

Photo Lettering is back. Relaunch in digital in November
http://www.idsgn.org/posts/introducing-photo-lettering/
http://www.photolettering.com/

5 rotten things about clients. Funny!

Plan tweets in advance:
http://www.wintech-italia.com/apps/tweetoftheday/

Another site to find the name of a font:
http://typenav.fontshop.com/

Chrome might be the fastest of all browsers by far, but it doesn’t seem to care about ram usage; sometimes going over 1.2GB of Ram. Obviously, it hasn’t been built to be used on old machines.
http://dotnetperls.com/chrome-memory

The guys from SitePoint/99Designs have done it again, now for full websites. I don’t mind you guys, but I think spec work is degrading.
http://flippa.com/

Apparently road fatalities in the NT are not uncommon with aboriginal people sleeping on the road at night…
http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/06/23/2606238.htm

5 Pet Peeves Designers Have With Developers
Erm this is a bit extreme I think; this is probably about uber nerdy geek developers… I hope I’m not this bad…
http://www.webdesignerdepot.com/2009/06/5-pet-peeves-designers-have-with-developers-and-how-to-avoid-them/

Microsoft, setting email 10 years back:
http://www.campaignmonitor.com/blog/post/2799/microsoft-to-ignore-web-standards-in-outlook-2010/
According to them, they use the Word rendering engine so emails composed in Outlook will look consistent when viewed by other Outlook users. Fair enough. But email is an open standard, Microsoft makes it sound as if it has to make it own standard.
What about web standards and emails displayed in other email clients? Surely Microsoft understand that if an Outlook 2010 user sends a Word formatted email to a somebody using Apple Mail or Thunderbird it’s going to be unreadable… It’s all about themselves, ain’t it???
A standards compliant Word would make emails ‘composed in word’ work in other email clients. From other clients, emails would display correctly in Word. Why is Microsoft still not following standards?

Microsoft, again:
You can only win $10 000 if you use IE8, and only IE8, nothing else.
http://www.microsoft.com/australia/ie8/competition/

State of IE article. Looks like we’re not going to get rid of IE6 soon.
http://www.quirksmode.org/blog/archives/2009/06/state_of_the_br_1.html

And for those interested in all the things that will be possible on the web sometime in the future. You’ll need Firefox 3.5 (some might work on Safari 4 too)
Shadows:
http://hacks.mozilla.org/2009/06/text-shadow/

Javascript to edit images, no server needed
http://people.mozilla.com/~vladimir/mdemos/imgmanip/image.html

CSS 3D transforms. Try the demo, and don’t forget to select some text on the page
http://hacks.mozilla.org/2009/06/3d-transforms-isocube/

Open video in the background, CSS mask (yes, real masking) using a vector image (SVG, not some pixelated jpeg/png/gif), javascript to turn the video frame around (no it’s not the camcorder that’s being rotated).
http://hacks.mozilla.org/2009/06/tristan-washing-machine/

Colour profiles are now a enabled for images. Not for CSS colours though. It’s not like any other browser does it anyway… So it’s still useless for website designs…
http://hacks.mozilla.org/2009/06/color-correction/

Interesting graphic of the evolution of media
http://www.baekdal.com/articles/Management/market-of-information/
It doesn’t have any references, isn’t based on any numbers, probably just based on opinion. But it’s an interesting view, and it makes me wonder what’s going to be next, especially when, and how fast it’s going to be adopted.

Finally a solution to the web font problem that would work on all browsers, even if it’s not ideal yet, is it worth paying for?
http://blog.typekit.com/2009/05/27/introducing-typekit/

Stats: IE7 users all update, IE6 users don’t update
Exactly what I expected… IE6 users have good reasons for staying with IE6 otherwise IE7/8 would have been installed automatically by windows update.
It’s going to take another 6 month, maybe even a year before it’s below 10%. We can’t drop support just yet I think.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3610/3588049466_5624ea3510_o.png

Beautiful Paper Art:
http://www.webdesignerdepot.com/2009/05/100-extraordinary-examples-of-paper-art/

Browser names
Remember this little story? Yes that’s how the browsers identify themselves when visiting sites. Not a joke.
http://www.webaim.org/blog/user-agent-string-history/
Announced last week, Opera 10 and all the future versions of opera will be named 9.80
http://dev.opera.com/articles/view/opera-ua-string-changes/

Browser sniffing users will be happy!

If WhatTheFont doesn’t work, try IdentyFont.
It’s a bit more work though.
http://www.identifont.com/

Make sure that the selected font looks good without Anti-Aliasing
The guys at Panic use Helvetica Neue Light on their site, and apparently it looks shit on all browsers but Safari on Mac.
Font rendering is not the same on every platform.
http://www.sitepoint.com/blogs/2009/06/08/truetype-font-variants-and-antialiasing/

Cool resume design:
http://theportfolio.ofmichaelanderson.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/resume-infographic.jpg

LiveSurface Image Library
Image templates of signage, tshirts, cd/dvd cases, bottles, cars, etc; including built-in 3D surfaces, masks, lighting.
It means: paste, scale, position your design and you’re done. There’s a video on the site that shows you how it works. It could save a lot of time to designers…
http://www.livesurface.com/

Pattern Cooler
Hundreds of patterns, each one with hundreds of variations. Don’t waste any time making your own, there’s a lot of choice here.
http://www.patterncooler.com/

World Map of Social Network Dominance
Looks like MySpace doesn’t dominate anything… And facebook is being used all over the world…
http://flowingdata.com/2009/06/08/world-map-of-social-network-dominance/

Awesome new things that can be done by Firefox 3.5 (all native, without plugins)
Content Aware Image Resizing
http://hacks.mozilla.org/2009/06/content-aware-image-resizing/
Blink detection
http://ajaxian.com/archives/finally-a-useful-blink-tag-detecting-your-user-blinking
Video & masks inside the browser, the mask is added afterward using css&javascript:
http://hacks.mozilla.org/2009/06/add-ambiance-to-your-videos/

Safari 4 is capable of some sweet thing too, native video with reflection!
Try it in safari 4, it won’t work otherwise, and click on one of the trailers. Does not work in Firefox because the demo uses H264 instead of the open video Ogg format for the video.
http://www.satine.org/research/webkit/video/trailers.html

Bing, Ms’ new search engine
Bing stands for But Is Not Google, they’ve already spent $80 million on advertising and this is their first ad. They could have done better.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4mH-0zriRM

Microsoft’s search engine usage jumps from 9 to 11%
http://www.builderau.com.au/news/soa/Microsoft-gets-Bing-bump-ComScore-says/0,339028227,339296844,00.htm

I guess this is mainly because of this:
IE7/6 forces users to use Bing as the default search engine. But according to Microsoft, it’s a bug.
How is it even remotely possible? An 9 year old browser forcing users to use as search engine which is virtually 2 weeks old? (opened to public 1st May)
I guess it would cut on advertising costs a fair bit to reach a lot wider audience! It wouldn’t surprise me if that bug was intentional. Microsoft, shameless yet again…
